7 Last-Minute Fall Landscape Ideas Anyone Can Do

Autumn is in full swing, and Halloween is nearly here. 1. Incorporate Fall Plants

Living in the midwest has its perks, and enjoying four seasons with varying landscapes is one of them. Mums, Aster, ornamental cabbage, and kale all make the top of the list. Use the plants in planters, beds, or to accentuate a patio or walkway. Or, brighten up a hardscape feature, such as a fire pit or outdoor kitchen. Finally, these plants provide the foundation of your seasonal landscape look, but it’s what you pair with them that really sets things off. We cover those things next. 

2. Mix in Pumpkins and Gourds

Pumpkins and gourds are a quintessential component of fall landscaping. They come in many different shapes and sizes, a variety of colors, and the textures offset well with plants. Some people opt for an entire display comprising these vegetable-like fruits. Get creative with this last-minute fall landscape idea by trying out different mixtures and placements. 

3. Take Advantage of Natural Fall Colors

If you live in Fishers, Carmel, or Indianapolis, the odds are you have trees and other nearby landscapes that change colors during the fall. Depending on your house’s exterior color, it may even naturally fit in with the immediate outdoor environment. As much as you can, use what you already have as a template. Fences provide a great backdrop to use as a display for a last-minute fall landscape. You can hang planters and other items from them, place a display along with them, and even use them as a background for a family photo.

5. Go for Well-Placed Wreaths and Baskets

Most people associate autumn with a bountiful harvest. For this reason, and because they pair so well, use wreaths and baskets in fall displays. Fill them with pumpkins, gourds, ornamental vegetables, or a mixture. Additionally, you can hang them from fences or the siding by your front door.

6. Don’t Forget the Haybales and Cornstalks

Haybales and cornstalks offer yet another texture for fall displays. In addition, they provide some neutrality in an otherwise color-abundant presentation. Moreover, haybales serve a dual purpose as both a display and a place to sit around a fire pit or for a photo shoot. Finally, cornstalks provide some much-needed height in otherwise low-sitting plants. At the same time, you can leverage steps and hardscape features to add to depth and height, too. 

7. Balance With Delicate Flowers and Herbs

Don’t underestimate the use of delicate flowers and herbs for autumn displays. Because most other features highlight heartiness and bounty, delicate flowers and herbs can soften that look and provide balance.
